Compact Metal Additive–Deformation System for Prototype Manufacturing and In-Field Repair

WSU Tech#: 22-1665

Description:

This invention is a portable, integrated metal additive-deformation-machining system designed for high-quality prototype manufacturing and efficient in-field tooling repair. The Unified Additive Deformation and Machining (ADM) technology combines metal deposition, thermal-mechanical deformation, and precision machining into a single coordinated platform. This patented process enables microstructure refinement and superior mechanical properties in repaired or fabricated metal parts. The current project focuses on miniaturizing this laboratory-validated system into a compact, portable platform, with particular emphasis on the additive and deformation processes for industrial field deployment, especially targeting steel tooling and die repair. By enabling in-process optimization and eliminating multiple separate steps, the ADM system improves material performance and repair quality while reducing turnaround time and enhancing reliability and surface quality.
